Chapter 4: Working Remotely from Outside the College
Introduction
This final part is about how to connect your personal device to the DoC machines, so that you can run code and other operations in department hardware (useful for testing courseworks, or later making use of resources like GPUs) from the comfort of your own home (or from a cafe, or wherever else you like to work!).
So far you have used SSH to connect from one lab machine to another, within the college network.
Here is a complete list of lab machines in the department that you can access this way.
But these machines are only directly accessible from within the college network.
We want to connect to these machines from outside that network. So how can you do this?
This exercise involves your own machine, but you’ll need physical access to a lab machine to do the initial setup (the two machines don’t have to be in the same place for this to work, so if you have a desktop, don’t worry).
Once you’ve done the setup here, you’ll be able to connect the personal device you’ve configured from anywhere with an internet connection – and we encourage you to give it a try from home to make sure it’s working!
